The future tunnel between Denmark and Germany will be powered by green electricity. An important milestone was achieved on 22/12-2022, when Femern A/S and Elecnor signed an agreement for the delivery of a transformer station in Rødbyhavn. The contract has a value of approx. 40 million Euro, states Femern A/S.
One of the largest stations in Denmark
The transformer station will be one of the largest of its kind in Denmark.
It will supply power to the Fehmarn Belt tunnel's railway and around 10 km of railway on Lolland, as well as powering the electrical installations in the tunnel. Elecnor will begin work on the establishment of the transformer station itself in 2023. It will be completed in stages and is expected to be delivered in 2028.
The contract was won by the Spanish company Elecnor, that has extensive experience from similar tasks across Europe. In the contract, Elecnor has promised high level energy efficiency and, amongst other things, that the transformer station will also have the capacity to serve future modes of electric transport, including charging stations for electric vehicles.
A milestone in the Fehmarn project
"The signing of the contract today is yet another milestone for the construction of the Fehmarn Belt connection. We are very much looking forward to the collaboration with Elecnor on the important task of making the tunnel ready for CO2-neutral operation when we open in 2029," says Jens Ole Kaslund, Technical Director of Femern A/S.
