The Fehmarn project has reached another milestone with the start of the casting of the tunnel portal on the Danish side.

These aerial photos show that the portals, which will create the transition between the road and rail network on land and in the tunnel itself, are now visible in the landscape, both in Rødbyhavn and on the German side in Puttgarden.

Casting underway
On the 1.5 million square meter construction site in Rødbyhavn (equivalent to 310 football fields) the tunnel factory is a significant landmark in the flat Lolland landscape.

Here, the casting of the first of a total of 79 standard and 10 special elements is now underway.

When the factory is in full operation, one standard element will be produced every two weeks for a duration of 3 ½ years.

The local road network is spared
The tunnel construction site on Fehmarn, Germany, which lies east of the existing ferry port, is around 1 million square meters and extends approx. three kilometers inland.

The construction site consists of a working port, a concrete plant and the tunnel portal itself.

The concrete plant shall only supply concrete for the tunnel portal itself, as all tunnel elements are manufactured at the factory in Rødbyhavn.

Supplies and raw materials are by enlarge sailed into the working port. This minimizes the heavy traffic to and from the construction site and therefore avoids burdening the local road network.

In addition to the tunnel portal, the construction work on Fehmarn also includes connection to the existing road network – motorway E47 and main road B207 – and to the existing railway network.

Next big milestone in 2024
The next major milestone is the completion of the first tunnel element, which will be launched from the tunnel factory in Rødbyhavn and connected to the tunnel portal.

This very significant event will take place in 2024.
